This piece is perhaps the peak of a little stylistic period I went through where I was experimenting with dissonance and unusually structured chords. Originally, I expected the piece to be so dense with these intense vertical harmonies that the improvisation could be practically "free." In practice, however, we quickly learned that the opposite was true: the complex harmonies required thoughtful and restrained work by the soloists.
